Autism & ASD-friendly dentistry

We are experienced with and welcome patients with ASD, autism or additional sensory or communication needs.

Calm, predictable dental care

We understand that dental visits can be challenging for people on the autistic spectrum – not just because of the dentistry itself, but also because of the unfamiliar environments, sensory input, unpredictability, and potential communication barriers.

Our approach is to be to be predictable, calm, respectful and flexible. We adapt how we work wherever possible to help patients feel at ease so that appointments feel more manageable.

A clear, understanding approach

We understand that autism presents differently for everyone. Some patients are comfortable communicating verbally, others may be non-verbal or prefer written communication. Some find bright lights or noise difficult, and some can be affected by unpredictability or changes to routine.

We focus on understanding what works best for each individual patient.

How we support autistic patients

Predictability and structure

We aim to keep appointments clear and predictable. We explain what will happen, in what order, how long things are likely to take, and how they will feel and taste.

Sensory awareness

Where possible, we adapt the environment to reduce sensory overload – minimising noise, maybe adjusting lighting or using dark sunglasses – to help avoid unnecessary stimulation.

Clear, direct communication

We try to use literal language and avoid vague instructions. If you prefer information written down or explained step by step, we’re happy to do that.

Extra time if needed

Appointments are unhurried. We allow time for pauses, questions, and processing information. We could consider booking a set of acclimatisation appointments to help build routine, set expectations and make step-by-step progress.

Control and consent

Nothing happens without your agreement. You can ask to stop, pause, or take a break at any time.

Letting us know what helps

If you’re comfortable doing so, it can be very helpful to let us know in advance about:

  • Sensory sensitivities (light, sound, touch)
  • Communication preferences
  • Triggers or previous difficulties
  • What has helped (or not helped) in the past

This can be shared in your medical history form or at the start of your appointment – whatever feels more comfortable for you.

First visits and assessments

For autistic patients, a first visit does not need to involve treatment.

It would usually be:

  • A visit to see the practice
  • A conversation about concerns
  • A gentle mouth examination if appropriate and comfortable

We’re happy to take as many steps as you feel comfortable, booking additional appointments when required.

Autism and dental anxiety

Some autistic patients also experience dental anxiety or needle phobia. These concerns often overlap, and we’re used to supporting patients where both are present.

You may also find our Nervous & Anxious Patients page helpful.

Children, teenagers and adults

We’re happy to support children, teenagers and adults on the autistic spectrum attending with parents or carers, including those who may not have had positive dental experiences in the past

We treat every patient as an individual and can adapt our approach to suit your needs and circumstances.

Being open about limits

We aim to be honest and realistic.

While we adapt our approach wherever possible, there may be situations where specialist services are more appropriate. If that’s the case, we’ll explain this clearly and support you with the next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to disclose a diagnosis?
No – although diagnoses can sometimes help us understand your needs, you are welcome to share as much or as little as you like. We focus on what helps you feel comfortable, not labels.

Can a carer or family member attend?
Yes – support people are welcome where helpful.

Can I visit the practice before treatment?
Yes – please get in touch and we’ll talk through what would help.
