“Oh my goodness, I’m pretty sure Angels work at this dental practice!

The short review is that my experience with Dr David Burton and Leanne was so effortless, with none of the tedium that often comes with dental work. They made me feel seen, supported, and reassured through the emergency appointment process and I left with a massive renewed appreciation for modern dentistry.

The long review is that I have not had a dental appointment in 13 years (due to a multitude of factors but primarily depression and, honestly, shame) but, due to a pretty nasty migraine and a little too much teeth grinding, something happened to one of my molars and I was in agony. I booked an appointment after seeing Park Road Dental Care on Google.

Originally, I had booked in for Friday, but after a nice lengthy 50 minute hold call with 111 on Monday morning, I managed to secure an emergency NHS appointment later that day and cancelled my appointment with Park Road.

Leanne, the wonderful dental nurse, gave me a call on Monday lunch time to check in and see if everything was okay. I explained my situation and she advised that they did have appointments available that day if the NHS one does not pan out and I thanked her. Really, who is doing it like that these days! She went out of her way to see that I was okay and offered support if my situation was to change… which, eventually, it did. My NHS appointment was scheduled for the following day. Call it impatience or temporary insanity caused by the pain, but I simply could not wait that long. I had no focus, little food, and about three hours sleep across six half hour naps. I called Leanne back and set up an appointment within the hour.

I was half a hour early (very eager!) but within minutes of arriving at the surgery, I was laying in the chair being checked over by Dr Burton and discussing options. I held a LOT of shame over my teeth and was a little scared but the environment and entire vibe of the whole appointment was very calm with no accusatory language or cautionary tales. I know my teeth are messed up and you can obviously see the damage from looking at them, but the only lesson that I received from the appointment was that dentists are nothing to be afraid of. They are there to provide you options and solutions. They’re there to help! We discussed what I could financially afford and settled on an extraction. David got that tooth out of me quicker than you can say “Dr Burton, please extract this tooth from me.”

Okay, a slight exaggeration. It was maybe a minute of pulling, max. Root and all!

I walked out of my appointment — toothless, £125 lighter (extraction cost and appointment cost, minus deposit paid online) — at the time my appointment was originally scheduled to start, which meant I was able to head back to work and actually focus on tasks without the throbbing ache in my jaw. I’m sure my team are glad for this because it means I’ve stopped complaining about it all the time. I didn’t realise the extent of the pain until I didn’t feel it anymore. Now, I can’t stop smiling. They even let me keep my tooth as a souvenir! Some might think that a little macabre, but it’s a nice reminder of everything they did for me, and the start of my journey to getting back on top of my dental health. The jury is out on if I want to make it into a necklace or not…

If you read all this, but why have you not booked an appointment yet? I’m going to get back to eating my soft foods and using a saltwater rinse.
